There's no denying the fact that the MCAT is a high-stakes exam, so naturally a little fear is to be expected. What I do have a problem with, however, is the predatory nature of the business. So, if it sounds like I have a bone to pick with the review courses because I did poorly on the MCAT, that's simply not true. But I attribute very little of that success to the review course. It's also worth addressing that I know how cynical I sound. Here is what I would do instead: purchase the course books which can be bought on amazon for less than $100, read those like you would any other textbooks, and take ALL of the AAMC practice exams. By the by, if you pay the advertised prices for the courses, you're a chump - don't be a chump. If I could do it again, would I? No, I would instead laugh as they offer to reduce the course price by a token $100. So, do I regret spending $1200 on a review course? Yes. For example, I was scoring decently on the review course practice exams, which are very memorization-intensive, but found that my AAMC practice test scores improved considerably (in some cases as much as 12 points) over the review course practice exams. This, despite the fact that the courses constantly reiterate to "read for ideas, not for concepts." A platitude easier said than done. In my experience, the actual MCAT is far more heuristical than the review course practice exams would lead you to believe. Once you take a step back from the review courses and reexamine the AAMC tests, I think you'll find some important differences therein. In the end what saved me were the AAMC practice exams. Sure, it helped by filling in the gaps in my knowledge but it failed by focusing too heavily - I imagine most review courses are guilty of this - on the memorization of facts and less on their application. I wasn't wholly unsatisfied but I don't think it properly prepared me for the exam. I took the Princeton Review MCAT review course. I should begin by disclosing that my advice may not be suited to everyone's specific style of learning. /r/GAMSAT - Australian & UK Medical school Admission Test.P/S = Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior (Tentative) AAMC Sample FL Score ConversionĬ/P = Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological SystemsĬARS = Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skillsī/B = Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems # Correct -> Scaled Score Converter for AAMC Material These posts will be removed and the user banned without warning, subject to the discretion of the mod team Learn MoreĪll of the above rules are subject to moderator discretion High Yield MCAT Links You have signed an examinee agreement, and it will be enforced on this subreddit.ĭo not intentionally advertise paid or free products or services of any sort.
